June 28, 2006 Minutes

Minutes for 06/28/06

Members present:

Chair Stone, Senators Brennan, Davidson, Feakes, Hazlewood, Hindson, James, McGee, Montondon, Warms, Winek

Guests: AVPFSS Nancy Nusbaum and Susan Day, Chair of Sociology

Meeting called to order at 3:00.

Discussion of Senate Survey on Perceptions of Administrators: A motion was made and passed to edit some survey remarks that will appear on the comment section of the Senate web page that made malicious third party references. The unedited remarks will go to the President and Provost.

Class & Lab Scheduling Proposal: AVPFSS Nusbaum and Chair Day made a presentation representing a larger committee appointed by the Provost to come up with a uniform starting time for classes. They have been meeting with groups across campus to try to discover what is good or what might be bad about the proposal.  The gist of the proposal is that all classes would have uniform starting times Monday through Thursday and would allow some exceptions for Friday and Saturday classes.  They were encouraging departments to go to their website: http://www.vpfss.txstate.edu/spacemgt/Utilization/default.htm and put in their fall schedule to see if any problems arise.

Development Leave: The Senate discussed the recommendation to change the wording for eligibility for development leaves that would give some flexibility to the requirement of six years continuous service between leaves.  A motion to change the wording was passed and the recommendation sent to the Provost.

Background Check:
The discussion on background checks for new employees continued.  The central issue concerns what features of a person’s past would be construed as disqualifying in terms of their employment.  The discussions will continue.

Faculty Handbook: The often-asked question about when will the new handbook for the faculty become available is still unanswered by the administration.
