I worked on three different projects for my REU:
Hard magnetic composites which are also referred to as permanent magnets bonded with polymer, have a substantial impact on automation equipment, medical devices, and motors, sensors, and actuators. Investigation of the use of thermosets that possess increased dimensional stability, improved thermal resistance, and superior mechanical properties could lead to the production of parts and devices that can withstand higher operating temperatures. In addition, learning how thermoset materials behave in a magnetic field can help to optimize the Magnetic Field Assisted Additive Manufacturing (MFAAM) procedure. Our main target is to test the applicability of thermoset and strontium ferrite oxide [SrO(Fe2O3)6] composite for actuators especially artificial muscles of a robot. We are using PDMS as thermoset polymer and characterizing using biaxial VSM.
