I study the magnetic properties of Magnetorheological Elastomers. My main interest is to better understand the magnetic anisotropy. Samples under study are hard magnetic soft materials such as strontium ferrite PDMS composites (in collaboration with Amanda Oiveira, and Drs. Wei Li and James Yang of Texas Tech University). This material belongs to a class of materials referred to as magnetorheological elastomers. Their elastic modulus can be controlled by an externally applied magnetic field, very similar to how the viscoosity of a magnetorheological fluid can be controlled by a magnetic field. Magnetorheological elastomers are being studied for application in vibration reduction, isolation, and absorption devices, actuators including artificial muscles, and novel sensors. My research is focussed in understanding the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic reversal.
