Chemistry Readiness Program

Any student who wishes to enroll in CHEM 1341 or CHEM 1335 must successfully complete the Chemistry Readiness Program OR successfully complete CHEM 1320 – Foundations of Chemistry, as a prerequisite course.

The Chemistry Readiness Program, combined with math prerequisites, helps ensure that students are prepared to be successful in CHEM 1341 or CHEM 1335.

The Chemistry Readiness Program allows students to enter CHEM 1341 or CHEM 1335 with a strong knowledge base, regardless of how long it’s been since the student’s last chemistry course.

The fee for the program cannot be applied to tuition and/or covered by financial aid. 

ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then creates an individualized learning path that instructs the student on the topics they are most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.

ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.

The assessment covers a variety of high-school-level math and science topics, each of which is considered prior knowledge by our instructors.

Students have up to six weeks to complete the Chemistry Readiness Program, from the date of purchase. Students may purchase a six-week extension for $30.00.

Regardless of when the access or extension was purchased, access to the program will end the day before census for the Fall and Spring semesters. This means that if a student purchases an access code for the Chemistry Readiness Program two days before census, they will have only one day to complete the program and produce a mastery percentage of 80 or higher.

Students will access the ALEKS Program via a TXST Canvas Course. Students complete an assessment and learning modules via ALEKS. Their score is sent back to TXST via Canvas.

ALEKS stands for Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces. ALEKS is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system.

Some of the topics, but not all, are compatible with JAWS.

Students can join the Chemistry Readiness Program for Fall of 2024 by using this URL to join the Canvas site.  Once they have joined this Canvas site, they can access ALEKS.

Note:  When students join this Canvas site, they must use their TXST credentials (netID and password). If students sign up with any other email or contact information, they will be removed from the site. Removal from the site will result in students having to pay for ALEKS a second time, and they will lose any progress within ALEKS.

To confirm you are joining via your TXST credentials:

1. Open an incognito or private window (the name of the window varies by app).
   1. Copy & paste the form link into the incognito/private browser.
2. Press “TXST Login.”
3. After entering your NetID and password, you will receive a push notification via Duo Mobile.
4. You should be led to a page that has “Enroll in Chemistry Readiness” in the title.
5. Press the “Enroll in course” button.
6. Follow the instructions on the Canvas site.

Students who want to register for CHEM 1341 or CHEM 1335 in the Summer 2024 semester do not need to participate in the Chemistry Readiness Program.

Students who wish to enroll in CHEM 1341 or CHEM 1335 in Fall 2024 will be able to enroll in CHEM 1341 or CHEM 1335 as long as they meet the math prerequisites. Students must complete the Chemistry Readiness Program by the deadline or they will be dropped.

To meet the mathematics prerequisites for CHEM 1341 and CHEM 1335, students must have one of the following:

• MATH 1315 or MATH 1317 or MATH 1319 or MATH 1329 or MATH 2321 or MATH 2417 or MATH 2471 with a grade of “C” or better.
• ACT Mathematics score of 25+ if taken 2/15/23 or later. ACT Mathematics score of 24 if taken prior to 2/15/23.
• SAT Mathematics score of 550+ if taken 3/1/16 or later. SAT Mathematics score of 520 if taken prior to 3/1/16.
• Accuplacer College Mathematics score of 86+.
• Compass College Algebra score of 46+.
• Next-Generation Advanced Algebra and Functions Test score of 263+.

It will take most students at least two weeks to complete the Chemistry Readiness Program. Some students may take up to six weeks.

The amount of time it takes to complete the Chemistry Readiness Program will vary greatly among students. Some students could complete the program in 11 hours, others may take more than 20 hours. Students should give themselves ample time to complete the program. It is important to recognize that you will be working through the Chemistry Readiness Program while possibly taking other classes, working, participating in extracurriculars, social activities, etc.

Most students preregister for CHEM 1341/1335, meaning they register for the course prior to the first day of classes. In order to remain preregistered for CHEM 1341/1335, you need to complete the Chemistry Readiness Program prior to the date the Office of University Registrar confirms that students meet prerequisites for the upcoming semester. If you do not complete the Program prior to those dates, you will be dropped from CHEM 1341/1335. If you are registered for CHEM 1141 or 1135 labs, you will also be dropped those labs.

Students need to achieve a mastery percentage of 80%. Since the Chemistry Readiness Program has a total of 125 topics, students will need to demonstrate mastery of 100 topics.  The topics are divided between two modules.  The first module has 100 topics.  Once you have mastered 95 of these topics, the second module will open.  You will then need to master 5 more topics of your choice between the two modules for a grand total of 100 topics or 80%.

Once you complete the program, your score is added to your Registration Eligibility, Holds & Excess Hours page, which is accessible via Catsweb. It will appear in the Test Scores section with the code “ALCH00.”

Once you complete the program via the ALEKS software, the score is sent to TXST. This can take up to 1 week.

Your score does not expire.

If your transcript reflects “CR” for CHEM 1341, you will:

1. have credit for CHEM 1341 and
2. be permitted to progress on to CHEM 1342. 

If you wish to take CHEM 1341 again for any reason, you will need to complete the Chemistry Readiness Program.

If registration is still open for the semester you want to take CHEM 1341/1335, you have three options:

1. Continue your work on the Chemistry Readiness Program and earn a score of 80. Then, add the course again.
2. Register for CHEM 1320 instead of CHEM 1341/1335. Upon earning a grade of C or better in CHEM 1320, you will be eligible to take CHEM 1341/1335.
3. Participate in the Chemistry Readiness Program prior to the next semester. Your progress from your last attempt at the Chemistry Readiness Program will not be saved. You will start from the beginning. (This is not recommended).
