Picture of glass of black coffee with a round icecube that has a round dot at nine o'clock. Above galss is shot glass of water and spoon to right. Items sit on a wood serving tray on a wood table.

Worlds away...

Sometimes my mind likes to travel in odd ways. In this instance, the trigger was the ice cube in my black coffee.

When this piece of ice was created, destiny took control and it was forever bound to me and my glass of black coffee, on a cold December morning. Why my glass and not somebody else's glass is what keeps me up a night.

Looking at this ice cube, it reminded me of a celestial body surrounded by the vastness of empty space. The more I looked at it this alien world began to take on different features including a large impact crater and long-ago dried up riverbeds.

In Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom series of novels (1912-1941) the first novel,  "Princess of Mars"(1912) introduces us to Barsoom (Mars) when the protagonist is mysteriously transported there, only to save the day by the novel's end.

Somehow, yesterday morning I too, was briefly, and mysteriously transported back to the sixth grade when I first read Princess of Mars.
