Hub New Music is “one of the most talked about younger contemporary classical ensembles” (Oregon ArtsWatch). With its unique instrumentation of flute, clarinet, violin, and cello, the ensemble of “intrepids” (WQXR, New York) has been praised for performances of adventurous repertoire that are “gobsmacking and perfectly played” (Cleveland Classical), with the Boston Globe encouraging audiences, "next time the group offers a concert, go, listen, and be changed." The ensemble celebrates the fluidity and diversity of voices in today’s classical music landscape. Its repertoire includes the works of leading composers such as Mason Bates, Matthew Aucoin, Anna Clyne, Kati Agócs, Nico Muhly, Robert Honstein, Laura Kaminsky, Angel Lam, and more. Highlights for the 2018/19 season include festival appearances at the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music Festival (Bowling Green, OH), Sacramento State Festival of New American Music, Blue Sage Arts Center Modern Music Festival (Paonia, CO), and Connecticut Summerfest (Hartford, CT); a new quartet by award-winning composers Kati Agócs; its international debut in mainland Japan with the Silkroad Ensemble’s Kojiro Umezaki (shakuhachi), and a collaboration with Boston's Urbanity Dance at the Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, MA). Fueled by the spirit of collaboration, Hub has brought several large-scale projects into fruition. These include “Matsuri,” an evening-length collaboration with shakuhachi player Kojiro Umezaki, and the Asia/America New Music Institute; a 25-minute collaborative work with the renown composer/harpist Hannah Lash; and a choreographed production of its Soul House program presented with Urbanity Dance and the Peabody Essex Museum. HNM was named one of WQXR’s “10 Cutting-Edge Artists That Have Captured the Imagination,” in 2016.

The story of Cinderella is a cultural touchstone, immortalized in film, literature and — thanks to French composer Jules Massenet — opera. His Cendrillon is a 19th-century take on the fairy tale, and an absolute delight in a genre dominated by heart-wrenching tragedies. Since Massenet’s adaptation is rarely staged, we thought we’d share this moment posted by Liceu Opera Barcelona, performed by none other than Joyce DiDonato (who is also singing the title role in the Met’s 2018 production). In this scene, Cendrillon drifts off, dreaming of the ball she has been forbidden to attend. La Fée (the Fairy Godmother) shows up, works her literal magic and makes Cendrillon’s dreams come true. Award-winning Performance artist and Juilliard trained trombonist Abbie Conant is somewhat of a legend in the international orchestral brass world. The story of her epic fight and ultimate victory against egregious gender discrimination in the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra where she won the position for principal trombone at a screened audition in 1980, inspired author Malcolm Gladwell to write the NY Times Bestseller, Blink where Ms. Conant’s story is detailed in the last chapter. The 11-year-long court battle was documented by composer/musicologist/activist, William Osborne in an article entitled, You Sound Like a Ladies Orchestra. The document is supported by actual court records and experiences in the orchestra with 89 footnotes. This source document has generated countless newspaper and magazine article  (Der Spiegel, {the German analog to Time Magazine}, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, etc.) as well as a documentary film, (Abbie Conant, Alone Among Men by Brenda Parkerson), a play produced at the Landestheater Linz, Austria by Award-winning British playwright, Tamssin Oglesby called, Der (eingebildeter) Frauenfeind, (The [Concieted] Misogynist) and a screen play for a feature film in the works by Canadian writer/producer Dale Wolf.

After winning her lengthy court case, Ms. Conant won a full-tenured Professorship at the University of Music in Trossingen, Germany and left the orchestra in 1993. Abbie Conant has performed instrumental music theater works with surround sound electronics in over 150 different cities around the world. She has given masterclasses in as many esteemed music institution such as The Juilliard School, The Eastman School, New England Conservatory, Yale School of Music, Indiana University, Royal Northern College of Music, the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, Sweden, DePaul, CalArts, McGill, Oberlin and many others. In collaboration with composer/husband William Osborne, the pair has created a new genre of chamber music theater. They have produced five evening-length chamber operas for singing/acting trombonist.

Texas State's FunKey Project was founded in 2018 by Dr. Daria Rabotkina for the local community. Piano lessons are open to students in grades K-12 and take place on the Texas State University campus in the School of Music.

Students receive private training on a weekly basis during the fall and spring semesters. Weekly lessons are taught by the members of keyboard faculty and piano majors at Texas State. Piano majors are supervised by the Texas State faculty members, and are eager to share their enthusiasm and love for piano education with the students of FunKey Piano Project!

The FunKey Project concludes each semester with an evaluation and a formal performance, where all families are welcome to celebrate music and their child’s efforts!

The Hill Country Youth Chorus performs their end of the semester performance.

Founded in 2005, The Hill Country Youth Chorus provides an accessible, comprehensive music education and performance program that serves boys and girls from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. The curriculum equips these young artists with the musical skills that enable them to seek the highest artistic standards in performances of challenging music. It is hoped that the discipline and concentration learned by each student-artist in rehearsal and performance will instill in them the values necessary to succeed in music and life. HCYC’s emphasis on excellence spotlights the collective strength inherent in young people collaborating in the fulfillment of a collective idea. The potential for human achievement provided by this model merits a resonance throughout the wider sphere of community life.
