Scholarships & Funding

Undergraduate Scholarships

• Barbara & Darrell and Margaret & Dennis Dunn Scholarship (Piersol-Dunn)

  Eligibility Criteria:

  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class.
  • Incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
  • Current Texas State undergraduate graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Must be a major in International Studies.
  • Undergraduate Piersol-Dunn Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours per semester.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Piersol-Dunn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.25 or above. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

• Board of Advisors Scholarship (BOA)

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student and working on completing a major in International Studies. 
  • Have a Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • Undergraduate BOA Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours per semester.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Board of Advisors Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

• Dennis & Margaret Dunn Scholarship

  • Applicants must be majoring in History or International Studies.
  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of their graduating class.
  • Current Texas State undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA.
  • Dunn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

• Ronald and Colette Johnson Foreign Affairs Scholarship

  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class.
  • Incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.25 GPA.
  • Current Texas State undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.25 GPA.
  • Must be a major in International Studies.
  • Undergraduate Johnson Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours per semester.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Johnson Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.25 or above if undergraduates. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

• Thomas L. and Helen E. Cox Endowed Scholarship

  • Must have a declared major in International Studies
  • Entering freshmen must have graduated in the upper third of their high school graduating class.
  • Currently enrolled Texas State students and transfer students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates in the following order of preference:
    • Native-born Texan (provide proof)
    • Texas resident (provide proof)
    • Child of a US military or former US military parent, or a student enrolled in ROTC (provide proof)
    • All other candidates

Graduate Scholarships

  Eligibility Criteria:

  • Incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work.
  • Current Texas State graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Must be a major in International Studies.
  • Graduate-level Piersol-Dunn Scholars must enroll for 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Piersol-Dunn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student and working on completing a major in International Studies. 
  • Have a Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above; if an incoming graduate student, must have minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work.

• Dennis & Margaret Dunn Scholarship

  • Applicants must be majoring in History or International Studies.
  • Current Texas State graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA.
  • Dunn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

• Helen Ratliff Cleaves Scholarship

  • Open to graduate students in International Studies.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Eligibility to be accepted as a graduate student at Texas State University.
  • Students must be enrolled for a minimum of nine hours during the semesters in which they receive the scholarship.
  • A minimum of a 3.25 GPA is required.

• Ronald and Colette Johnson Foreign Affairs Scholarship

• Kenneth Wilson International Exchange Scholarship

  • Open to graduate students from all disciplines.
  • Students must be enrolled for a minimum of nine hours during the semesters in which they receive the scholarship.
  • A minimum of a 3.25 GPA required.

• Paul D. Coverdell Fellowship

  All returned Peace Corps Volunteers who satisfactorily complete their service have lifetime eligibility for the Coverdell Fellows program. Most returned Volunteers fall into this category. Satisfactory completion includes the following:

  • volunteers who completed the full two-year tour of Peace Corps service (not more than 90 days of emergency leave)
  • volunteers granted "early close of service"
  • volunteers granted "interrupted service" status because of circumstances beyond their control
  • volunteers who were medically separated

  In addition, returned Peace Corps Response Volunteers and Global Health Service Partnership Volunteers who complete 12 months of service have lifetime eligibility for the Coverdell Fellows program. The 12 months may come through a single, year-long tour or a combination of shorter tours.
