IAB NEWS 2021

Erling LaSalle, Engineering Technology alumnus and a new member of our IAB, gave a presentation at the October 14th meeting of the Student Chapter of the American Foundry Society at Texas State. In the presentation, Erling discussed efforts at FTC Solar to convert assemblies into castings. Erling presented a specific case, an upper damper arm, that is being converted from a complex assembly into a single cast steel part. The conversion process involved design changes made possible by advanced computational tools including a generative material optimization and nonlinear finite element analysis. Following the presentation, students had the opportunity to ask questions about FTC Solar’s business model and to gain valuable career advice.

PLC donation by Phoenix Contact
Phoenix Contact donated two PLC sets the Engineering Technology Programs. This donation was facilitated by Mr. Jack Krohmer who joined the IAB in Fall 2019. The future plan is to unitizes the PLCs to control devices in various  manufacturing labs in the ET department. The PLCs will be connected to Ignition Software to create an integrated control, monitoring, and data acquisition system.

IAB NEWS 2019

CMC-Sponsored Senior Design Project
In Spring 2019, CMC sponsored a Senior Design Project related to design and fabrication of a tool that can be used to extract the mandrel from the electrode arm that incorporates worker safety, does not damage the arm or mandrel, and is relatively simple to use. Two student teams were involved in this project. One of the teams received the Industry Choice Award in the Senior Design Day. Dr. Sam Matson facilitated this collaboration.
