    • Texas State subscribes to the nationally recognized Human Subject protection training program offered by CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative). Curriculum content is provided by well-known experts and is updated regularly. The CITI program is available online 24 hours a day, and applicants can save their progress, log in and out of modules, and finish courses at their own pace.

The Texas State University curriculum consists of a number of modules containing lessons and short multiple-choice quizzes used for various training requirements (IRB, IACUC, Biosafety, and Conflict of Interest). Content will vary somewhat between faculty level and student level courses. Additional modules or optional courses available within a module can be added by the researcher allowing each researcher to customize their account for specific researcher needs. Information on how to add courses are referenced in CITI’s Updated Guide to Getting Started Video. IRB applicants, sponsoring faculty, CO-PIs, and key personnel are required to complete CITI training at the time of application submission to the IRB.

Step 1: Log in to the  CITI Program website. Select “My courses” to gain access to the Log in page. First time users should view CITI’s Updated Guide to Getting Started Video.

      • Texas State affiliated researchers select “Texas State University SSO” and use your active Texas State net ID and password to log in.
      • Non-Texas State affiliated researchers register and create your own username and password. Contact the IRB to determine if an alternative ethics training course is acceptable if you do not have a CITI account with their institution.

Step 2: If creating a new account or adding a new course you will be presented with a series of questions or options to enable you to enroll in the Learner Group appropriate to your interests or your role in Human Subject Research / Lab-Animal Welfare or other curriculum selected by your institution.

      • Select the appropriate selection to Question 1 – Protection of Human Subjects Research Course. Most researchers will need to select the Social Behavioral researcher option. If your project involves an exercise protocol or medical procedures (EEG, blood draws, etc.) the Biomedical Researcher is more appropriate.
      • You should skip any remaining questions if they do not apply to you (working with animals) or select take at a later time if available. The course(s) you are enrolled in depends only on your answers to the "Select Curriculum" questions. New curriculum courses can be added at any time when you select “add a course” under Learner Tools

Step 3: You should have successfully been enrolled at a minimum in one of the following modules: Social Behavior Research or Biomedical Research

      • The module assigned should be specific to your level (student or not student). Documentation of certificate of completion of one of the assigned modules are required at the time of IRB submission. You may print/save a copy of the completion certificate for your own records.
      •  If you have questions about the course module assigned to you based on the questions you answered during account registration you can contact the Research Integrity and Compliance IRB division by email.

Texas State University’s Assurance with the federal Office of Human Research Protections requires that the University provide an education program in Human Subjects Protection. Completion.  CITI training is required for Texas State faculty and students applying to the IRB, faculty advisors supervising student applicants, and all key personnel listed at time of submission.

      • At any time learners can access their own password, log in ID, and training records directly from CITI.
      • The CITI Program support staff can be reached at 888.529.5929 or by e-mail at support@citiprogram.org.
      • CITI phone support is available 8:30 am - 7:30 pm, U.S. Eastern Time, Monday - Friday.
  • An additional mandatory training is being required for all researchers interacting with minors. Complete the Child Protection training which is valid for 3 years. This training does not replace the existing CITI training which contains a minor population lesson. Questions about training should be directed to orsp-irb@txstate.edu.
