The Health Scholar Showcase is part of Texas State University’s Translational Health Research Initiative, which seeks to improve health by connecting faculty and community partners to engage in innovative research and sponsored programs. An increasing number of Texas State faculty representing at least 30 departments, schools and centers, and at least eight colleges, are currently engaged in health research and sponsored programs.

Our growing health research portfolio provides new opportunities to develop collaborative partnerships among scientists, clinicians, and members of our community to tackle complex health issues. In conjunction with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Dr. Melinda Villagran leads the Translational Health Research Initiative and supports faculty seeking to attract new grant funding, build their research teams, develop research tools, or move forward on multidisciplinary programs.

Ann Stevens

Ann Stevens, Keynote Speaker
President, BioMed San Antonio

As Founding President of the non-profit corporation, BioMed SA, Ann Stevens brings a unique combination of experience in the biomedical field, investment community and media industry – along with a collaborative leadership style and a passion for community service – to her role of promoting and growing San Antonio’s leading industry, healthcare and the biosciences. In this role, she fosters the growth of local startup companies as well as homegrown industry leaders; helps recruit biomedical companies to San Antonio, and travels throughout the nation and world to raise the visibility of San Antonio as a City of Science and Health.

Before accepting her leadership role with BioMed SA in 2005, Stevens spent eight years as Director of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations for ILEX Oncology, Inc., San Antonio’s first publicly traded biopharmaceutical company. She was a key member of the leadership team that raised the market capitalization of this homegrown, startup company from under $100 million to its final acquisition price of $1 billion by Genzyme Corporation in December 2004.

While at ILEX, Stevens participated in getting two new anti-cancer drugs approved by the FDA, representing new hope for patients with leukemia, and experienced first-hand the difference this industry can make in people’s lives. She also developed a strong working knowledge of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, partnering with other drug companies and interfacing regularly with peer companies, investors and physicians at national medical meetings and investment banking conferences.

Prior to joining ILEX, Stevens spent 17 years on the corporate staff of global media firm, Harte-Hanks Communications, Inc., where she served as Director of Corporate Communications. She began her career as a reporter for two Harte-Hanks daily newspapers in West Texas. She holds a B.A. degree in journalism from Texas State University, graduating with highest honors, and was named a Distinguished Alumna in 2013. She was honored by the San Antonio Business Journal in 2014 with Women’s Leadership Awards for Non-Profit Leadership and Community Leader of the Year.
