Engagement Symposium Of Philosophy And Dance

Engagement: Philosophy and Dance

ENGAGEMENT: PHILOSOPHY AND DANCE

Join the Mark Morris Dance Group, the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, and ARCOS Dance, together with scholars from around the world, 8-10 September 2016, for three days celebrating Modern Dance!

Engagement: Philosophy and Dance is a joyous celebration of life with performances and dialogues exploring the meanings and experiences of dance.

Featuring live performances and keynote speakers from the fields of aesthetics, philosophy of art, dance theory, choreography, and multi-media dance; the symposium will also include interdisciplinary panels for scholars, practitioners, and students. The symposium is meant to build a platform to approach vital questions concerning dance and human well-being in a manner that is accessible not only to philosophers but dancers and people from the more general community. Participants will join us from as far away as Greece, Sweden, Portugal, the UK, and Brazil, and as close as Austin, Houston, and San Marcos!  Modern dance has long been a vehicle for asking and exploring philosophical questions by challenging cultural norms and assumptions.  The goal of the conference is to approach the aesthetics of modern dance deeply and broadly, expanding scholarly interests in aesthetics of dance as a means to identify, understand, analyze, and respond to societal problems such as blocking diversity, elitisms, prejudices, loneliness, anger, and others through music, rhythmic embodiment and profound meaning.

Engagement is sponsored by: the Department of Theatre and Dance, the Department of Philosophy, the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the College of Liberal Arts, the Office of the Provost, the Office of Equity and Access, the University Performing Arts Committee, the Student Fee Committee,  the Alkek Library, and the American Society for Aesthetics.
