Overview:

Presenter(s): Amalie Wheat

Goals:

  • To eliminate fear and intimidation factors when serving and working
  • with persons who are deaf.
  •  To provide faculty and staff with information that will benefit
  • them personally while interacting with deaf persons.

Lessons will include:

  • Receptive/expressive sign skills
  • Communication tips
  • Deaf culture
  • Questions concerning use of an interpreter:
  • What is an interpreter?
  • Why do I need an interpreter?
  • What is the interpreter’s role?
  • What are the interpreter’s limitations?
  • How do I request an interpreter?
  • Other—as requested by faculty/staff

Attendance will be documented at all sessions: Professional Development
certificates will be presented with attendance at a minimum of 5
sessions.
