Texas State University’s School of Social Work has been honored with the 2017 Award for Outstanding Commitment to Excellence and Innovation by the Texas Distance Learning Association (TxDLA).

The award is given to “the person, institution, or corporation who has done the most to benefit and advance the applied practice of distance learning,” per the TxDLA website. The School of Social Work won in the four-year higher education category.

“The School of Social Work at Texas State University has been a pioneer in social work distance education since 2004 and continues to pave the way to ensure access and mobility for rural communities within our state while preparing social workers to meet with needs of an ever complex global environment,” said Jose Coll, director of the School of Social Work.

Distance learning is a general term for online education, encompassing correspondence, hybrid and online-only courses. As the school has embraced distance learning, enrollment and recognition have grown.

“Our graduate program continues to be ranked among one of the best and most affordable online social work programs in the nation,” Coll said.  “It continues to grow with an existing enrollment of over 380 graduate students in our Master of Social Work program, many of which take advantage of our online offering.”

Coll, who joined the school in 2016, said the award is confirmation of the hard work of everyone involved.

“This honor would not have been possible if not for the work and commitment of our faculty who have to drive the curriculum and vision of the school,” he said. “It confirms that the School of Social Work, its faculty, students and staff are remarkable leaders within our profession.

“This award also motivates us to continue to question and adapt our curriculum and pedagogy to enhance what we are doing right so that we continue to go from ‘Good to Great’,” Coll said.
