The University Star, the student newspaper at Texas State University-San Marcos, received a National Finalist designation for Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper in the prestigious Society of Professional Journalists’ 2011 Mark of Excellence Awards.

The Star was submitted first to the regional competition. The paper must win its region before qualifying for the national competition. In the Best Overall Newspaper category, The Star finished first.

SPJ judges recognize collegiate work published or broadcast during 2011. This year, student journalists submitted more than 4,000 entries. Only one National Finalist winner and two finalists are selected each year.
