SAN MARCOS – Larry Teis has been named director of athletics at Texas State University-San Marcos, university President Denise M. Trauth announced Thursday.

Teis has served as associate director of athletics for external affairs at Texas State since December 1998. In that position, Teis was responsible for external and community relations for the Texas State Department of Athletics, as well as game management, marketing, promotions, facilities and ticket sales.

“We believe that Larry Teis possesses the skills, experiences, leadership and values that are exactly what this institution and this department need. We believe Larry has the support of the department’s coaches, staff, boosters, alumni and fans,” said Trauth.

Teis said, “This is a great day for me, my family and my friends. I know the tremendous potential we have here and look forward to leading this great athletics department.”

He said his first challenge will be to fill the two associate athletics directorships, one for internal affairs and one for external affairs.

“For a director of athletics, it is important to find senior staff members who share in your vision and who demonstrate loyalty and respect,” he said.

James Studer, vice president of Student Affairs at Texas State, said the university administration had considered conducting a nationwide search for a new director of athletics, but soon determined the right person for the job was already at Texas State.

“It became apparent very early in the process that Larry was the perfect candidate for this position,” said Studer.

Trauth said the university is in the final stages of identifying a consultant who will be hired to work with her, Studer and Teis in identifying the department’s strengths and weaknesses in order to move the department forward to position it as a premiere program.

A native of Fort Worth, Teis came to Texas State after spending four years as the director of athletics marketing at TCU. In that position, he developed the marketing plan for all sports at TCU, including facility signage, season ticket campaigns, game day operations and corporate sponsorships and donations. He has also served as the assistant director of the Lobo Club at the University of New Mexico.

Teis holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from TCU, a master’s in sports administration from St. Thomas University of Miami, Fla., and a doctorate in health, physical education and recreation with an emphasis in sports administration from the University of New Mexico.

Teis and his wife, Jana, have two daughters, Taylor (10) and Shelby (6).
