Becoming an Intern

Student Eligibility

Undergraduate 

GPA: overall Texas State GPA of a 2.75 or higher 

Prerequisites: Completion of at least 60 semester hours of coursework. With the exception of those majoring in International Studies with a focus in Travel and Tourism, the internship is not required. However, in most cases, the course can fulfill a requirement within the IS core, focus or global studies component (pending Center approval). 

Course Credit: IS 4387 is a three credit hour course; IS 4687 is a six credit hour course. 

Internship Hours: IS 4387 requires a minimum of 150 hours of work at the internship site or virtually. IS 4687 requires a minimum of 300 hours of work at the internship site or virtually. 

Additional Requirements: Both courses (IS 4387/IS 4687) require a daily internship work log, journal, organizational research paper, and an evaluation by the internship supervisor. 

Enrollment in an internship course requires approval by the international studies academic program coordinator. 

 

It can take some time to set up internships. Students who are interested in completing an internship for course credit should start doing their research early!

Graduate

Prerequisites: Completion of at least 18 semester hours of coursework. Non-Thesis students are required to complete the internship for credit.  

Course Credit: IS 5387 is a three credit hour course. 

Internship Hours: IS 5387 requires a minimum of 150 hours of work at the internship site or virtually. 

Additional Requirements: IS 5387 requires a research paper of 20 pages in length.

Enrollment in an internship course requires approval by the international studies academic program coordinator and center director.
