In Remembrance of Kristallnacht
On 9 November 1938, an order was given by Nazi German authorities to terrorize and arrest Jewish citizens, resulting in tens of thousands of people being sent to concentration camps. Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, marked a violent escalation against Jewish people. This escalation of violence was a continuation of anti-Semitic policies instituted in 1933, but were part of a long history of discrimination against Jewish people. We come together to remember that moment, the 80th anniversary of the event, and to take a stand against anti-Semitism and hate still present in the world today. We invite the Texas State community to participate in a lecture, poetry readings, and dialogue.
The event will be held at the fountain on Bobcat Trail (between Flowers and Commons), and as a back-up in case of poor weather we would move the event to the Honors Coffee Forum.
Tentative commemoration plan:
- Dr. Louie Dean Valencia (History) — Intro (2-minutes)
- Dr. Margaret Menninger (History) – Brief history of Kristallnacht (5-7 minutes)
- Moment of Silence
- Texas State Community — Poetry relating to the Holocaust to be read by faculty and students (Time variable)
- Students/faculty can bring their own poetry, or read from poetry provided by Dr. Lisa Haegele and Dr. David Navarro (Modern Languages)
- Dr. Rebecca Raphael (Philosophy) — A short reading from Elie Wiesel or other (~5 minutes)
- Dr. Louie Dean Valencia (History) — Fascism then/now and open up to a discussion for students (3-5 minutes)
- Texas State Community — Dialogue/Space open to students
