Trace Etienne has been teaching at Texas State University since the early 1990s. Over her long tenure, she has taught survey courses in US History, World History, and Texas History as well as methods courses for future history and social studies teachers. Ms. Etienne’s primary form of instruction is the online classroom. Her online courses incorporate a wide variety of study and assessment tools.
She earned her undergraduate degree and public school teaching certificate at Southwestern University in 1986 and went on to earn her Masters from Texas State in 1993. In addition, she has taken post-graduate courses in Instructional Technology from Virginia Tech University. She believes that the key to good instruction involves guiding others in their exploration and learning of new concepts, information and ideas. As she sees it, “the duty of the teacher is to create opportunities for students to discover what they need to know.” Her approach incorporates multiple learning style and a strong student-centered methodology.

These courses have the same rigor and expectations as traditional face to face classes but due to the online environment they do require a higher degree of independent learning. Communication between students and between the instructor and students is primarily maintained through emails and discussion boards. It is an asychronized environment--meaning that there is never a time when the entire class will be online simultaneously. As the course is taught online, it is expected that students have reliable access to the World Wide Web as well as to a computer. Online classes provide students with a great deal of freedom but also require that students demonstrate a great deal of responsibility and self-direction. These courses are both writing and reading intensive.
