At Texas State, I'm dedicated to mentoring all students; as a member of the Diversity Scholars Network (DSN) at the University of Michigan's National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID), I am committed to advancing understandings of historical and contemporary issues related to culture, difference, identity, inequality, oppression, power, and representation. Before SMTX, I taught at the University of Texas at Austin (UT/Austin) and at The American University in Cairo (AUC).

I serve in the George Perkins Marsh book prize committee of the American Society for Environmental History (ASEH). Lately, I've begun to work on UGEMA, l'Union générale des étudiants musulmans algériens (1955-1962). My short film "UGEMA in Tunis” illustrates how people lived everyday lives, while (as Samer Ali says) "forming friendship, falling in love, having fun, and venerating the holy" across national boundaries during the Cold War.
