Nationhood Today in the U.S. and India: Learning with Gandhi

Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi will present a lecture titled "“Nationhood Today in the U.S. and India: Learning with Gandhi." Those attending will be welcome to ask questions or make comments at the end of the lecture. All Texas State students, staff, and faculty are invited to the free event.

Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi, 2021Dr. Rajmohan Gandhi is a historian who has written over a dozen books, including a biography of Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhi: The Man, his People and the Empire, published by the University of California Press, 2008. In 2002, his biography of the first (and last) Governor-General of India, Rajaji: A Life, a biography of Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, the top award literary award in India, which is conferred by the Sahitya Akademi, Indian’s National Academy of Letters.

Dr. Gandhi has been active in peace-making efforts in a variety of contexts. Since 1956, he has worked with Initiatives of Change, a global organization dedicated to "building trust across the world's divides" of culture, nationality, belief, and He served as president of Initiatives of Change International in 2009 and 2010. He led the Indian delegation to the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva in 1990. From 1990 to 1992, Rajmohan was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. 

Rajmohan Gandhi is currently Research Professor in the College of Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From 1997 to 2012, he was a faculty member at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has also been a visiting professor at Michigan State and has taught in major universities in India. He has presented lectures on Mahatma Gandhi’s relevance today at Oxford University, the University of California at Berkeley, Georgetown University, and other institutions.
