Meeting called to order at 4:00.
UCC Recommendation: Senator Hazlewood presented the recommendation of the University Curriculum Committee that in order for the University to comply with Legislature’s 120-hour rule, no cuts should be made to the University’s General Education Core. There was a lively general discussion. Discussion in favor of cutting the University’s core requirements came from the College of Business, the Department of Engineering & Technology and Music. Comments to retain the core requirements came from the Department of Philosophy. There were a number of questions seeking clarity with regard to what options were actually available, including whether exemptions might be possible for certain programs. The Senate will act on the UCC recommendation next week: either to accept or reject the UCC recommendation. If the UCC recommendation is rejected, the Senate must come up with an alternative proposal.
ACC Recommendation: The Senate accepted the recommendation of the Academic Computing Committee to fund nineteen of twenty-eight projects totaling $359,977.76. The unencumbered surplus of $165,022.24 will carried over to next year’s ACC funding cycle.
Senate Newsletter: The was some discussion of using an edition of the Senate Newsletter for the Senate’s annual report to the faculty regarding its activities. Senator McKinney agreed to come up with a bulleted list of accomplishments during the past year. The Senate will discuss the mechanics of the actual delivery of information to the faculty at the next meeting.
