60 New Texas CPM Graduates and
June & August 2020 Graduates Recognized

By Sue Breland

Texas State University’s William P. Hobby Center for Public Service graduated sixty new Texas Certified Public Managers® in our first live virtual graduation ceremony over Zoom on December 10, 2020.  In this unprecedented year of global pandemic, Texas CPM students showed tremendous tenacity in attending online classes and completing course work, while serving the needs of their communities as professionals and meeting the challenges faced by their own families.

The CPM graduates were located in the Arlington, Edinburg, Houston, Nacogdoches, Round Rock, and San Marcos areas of Texas. The graduates participated in CPM Programs offered by Texas State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston, and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

In 2020, a Scholarship was established by June 2020 CPM Graduate, Don Kinnett. During the December Graduation, Mr. Kinnett explained why he and his wife initiated the ongoing scholarship for future CPM students at Texas State University. After retiring from the private sector and returning to complete his bachelor’s degree, an advisor introduced him to the CPM program and he immediately made the program part of his degree path. While participating in CPM courses, engaging public service professionals in classes and hearing about the challenges many face in funding their education, Mr. Kinnett decided his family could do something to help them achieve their goals as he did. Two CPM students in the Round Rock and San Marcos programs were awarded $1000 scholarships: Mark Hanson and Juliana Timpe.  Mr. Hansen was on hand to express his thanks for this much appreciated assistance.

We were honored to have Austin City Manager, Spencer Cronk, bring the Graduation address. Mr. Cronk brought a timely message of the critical need for professional public administrators in times of crisis.  It has never been more evident than now that excellence in public service on the local level makes a positive difference in saving lives and bringing stability to our communities.

You can watch the Graduation ceremony including Mr. Cronk’s address, here.
