Course: Gottman Level 1: "Bridging the Couple Chasm"
              Gottman's Couples Therapy" A New Research-Based Approach

Dates: August 2-3, 2019

August 2: 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

August 3: 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Costs:

Early Bird Fee (before July 5, 2019): $199

CEU: CEU's are available for an additional cost of $29.99 paid directly to PESI upon completion of the program. 11.0 CEUs are awarded for this section.

Level 1 Prerequisites

  • This training is only available to current Texas State students, alumni, or faculty and staff of a clinical program at Texas State University (e.g. professional counseling, psychology, social work).

Level 1 Course Description

Based on 40+ years of Dr. Gottman's research, this workshop offers students and clinicians a scientifically-based roadmap to help couples manage conflict, build friendship, and support each other's dreams. The Gottman Couples Therapy Level 1 is video-based training. During this two-day workshop, participants will learn:

  • New research-based assessments and effective interventions to help understand couples' struggles.
  • Research-based strategies and tools to help couples successfully manage conflict.
  • Skills that empower couples to dialogue about their worst gridlocked issues by uncovering their underlying dreams, history, and values.
  • Methods to help couples process their fights and heal their hurts
  • Techniques for couples to deepen their intimacy and minimize relapse.

Participants will experience:

  • Demonstrations of the Gottman’s working with real clients, using Gottman Method Therapy.
  • Thorough explanation of Dr. John Gottman’s landmark research with couples.
  • Each participant receives one 300-page clinical training manual, featuring 25 relationship assessment questionnaires and 8 interventions designed to help couples work through the Sound Relational House.
  • The Gottman Level 1 Certificate of Completion will be awarded.

Level 2 Prerequisites

  • Participants must have already completed the Level 1 training.
  • This training is only available to current Texas State students, alumni, or faculty and staff of a clinical program at Texas State University (e.g. professional counseling, psychology, social work).

Level 2 Course Description

The Gottman Couples Therapy Level 2 is video-based training. During this training, participants will learn how to:

  • Assess a couple’s “Friendship Profile,” “Conflict Profile,” and “Shared Meanings Profile”
  • Develop interventions that couples can use as antidotes to the “Four Horsemen”
  • Help couples to soothe physiological flooding
  • Apply six modes of changing the “Attack/Defend System” in a couple’s interactions
  • Assist couples in establishing dialogue about their grid-locked conflicts
  • Select and implement interventions to help couples deepen their “Friendship System” with rituals of connection
  • Select and implement interventions to help couples create a shared system of values and meaning
  • Identify five different co-morbidities common to couples using Gottman Assessments and Interventions
  • CEU's are available for an additional cost of $39.99 paid directly to PESI upon completion of the program.  19.0 CEUs are awarded for this section.
