Lydia Samuel is a Visual and UX Designer at IBM working in Cloud, Data, and AI. Lydia first joined IBM as an intern in February 2020 during her last quarter at her university. During her time in school, she changed her major over five times. Not because she didn’t know what she wanted to do, but because there wasn’t a major at her school that seemed to match her interests or ambitions. After many quarters of trying to make something fit that wasn’t for her, she realized she was fighting the wrong battle. That’s when she petitioned to create her own major and pave her own path, and became the first person to graduate from Santa Clara University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Computer Interaction.
She continues to pave paths in her current role by advocating for Black designers and connecting them to opportunities. She does this through IBM’s Racial Equity in Design initiative, where they are ensuring racial equity is instilled in the design culture inside and outside of IBM.
