Religious ceremony to protect against witchcraft [brujeria]. For the people who believe the ancient customs, this is how the attacking illness [enfermedad de ataque] happens. For example, when a person goes into the field and gets a bad illness, in the field, for this illness you need to call a shaman to divine the problem. [Image] Ancient bed.

First, lay out 12 amate paper beds around the bed of the sick person in the form of a square. Then lay out the spirits and throw 4 drops of aguardiente after you light 4 cigars for the jews to smoke. Then freeze some more aguardiente so you can baptize each of the jews, and name each one. The shaman will make a tlapexque [probably tlapechtli, “bed” or “scaffolding”] in the form of a chair. At each corner of the tlapexque, he will place a tallow candle and 12 amate paper beds. On the bed, put 24 amate paper spirits, 7 tissue paper jews, 4 drops of aguardiente, because this is how you baptize the 14 jews, 7 inside and 7 outside the house. Also hang the jews or leave them there. The jews are made of different colors of tissue paper. From the time the musicians begin to play until the ceremony is over, the shaman is sweeping and singing. The wheel is hanging by a rope from the ceiling of the house, but a person will lower it four times until it’s on the floor, where the sick person is. You make the bed of the jews with two pieces of jonote fiber and banana tree, and you put everything in the tlapexque. If not, the heart of the mountain will be angry, and when the child is born, if you didn’t make the offering, his messengers will tell him. To make an offering to the god of the countryside, you need 24 mulberry amate paper beds for the lord of the countryside to rest on, 2 little birds of the countryside, 24 shirts for the god of the tree made of mulberry amate paper, mulberry paper napkins, and from tissue paper, 4 flowers for the tlapanco, 2 water spirits and one of the sick person also in mulberry amate paper, 24 corn tortillas, 24 balls of masa, 24 heads of masa, 4 candles and a little incense, 8 hen eggs, and 2 turkey eggs.
