Located between the Academic Services Building (ASB), which was formerly the former LBJ Memorial Student Center, and Flowers Hall, the Bell Tower was built in the 1970s. Prior to this bell, a group of World War I veterans donated a single bell that was once installed near Old Main that signaled class changes. That bell (the "College Bell") now resides in the Veteran's Memorial Garden at the east end of Flowers Hall.
The controls for the Bell Tower are located in an ASB storeroom, so with the opening of the current LBJ Student Center near the Alkek Library in 1997, the bells were slowly forgotten.
More recently, a new digital system was installed in the Bell Tower, bringing it back into operation, with chimes daily at noon. The digital system plays hundreds of pieces of music and can be controlled remotely. Previously, the bells chimed out carols during the Christmas season and the university song, "Alma Mater," played on significant dates in Texas State's history.
