NASA Backpack Program

Overview

NASA Backpack Program

The FAMA Backpack Program initiative is a coordinated, grade-wide, classroom-to-home enrichment STEM activity that includes the teacher, each student in the class, and the students’ respective families. Specific planned learning objectives in science and math should be selected to guide overall learning intent for each grade-level participating.

Each backpack is filled with materials for an engineering design-based activity. Backpacks are sent home as an extension of classroom lessons. Students are asked to make improvements on their individual designs at home. Students then return the redesigned model to school and share with classmates. Materials included in the backpack highlight NASA educational activities, resources, and careers. Each backpack also includes a copy of the NASA activity, a letter to parents, a journal for family responses, and the materials needed to complete the activity. Spanish-translated materials are included in the backpacks for each family.
