Purpose
Effective Learning is a 3-hour elective course designed to increase your potential for academic success. You will learn research-proven methods and the most effective study strategies necessary to earn high grades in a university setting. SWT's Effective Learning course is a model course adopted by several universities and community colleges throughout the country interested in equipping their students with the skills needed to flourish in an academic setting. What will you learn?

Self-Assessment of Factors Which Impact Learning
To become a strategic and active learner, you must first be aware of your learning strengths and weaknesses. To deepen your understanding, you will complete three self-report inventories: Weinstein's Learning and Study Skills Inventory, Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, and the Myers-Briggs (Personality) Type Indicator.

Self-Regulation for Learning
To approach academic tasks successfully, you will learn a variety of self-regulatory skills and strategies such as time management, learning effectively from texts and lectures, preparing for and taking tests, managing motivation, and setting goals. You will also receive instruction on learning to navigate successfully within the Blackboard groupware used in many of your classes at SWT, as well as learn about the multitude of SWT resources available to ensure your academic achievement.

Cognitive Theory and Strategies for Learning
Your goal in this course will be to transfer successful strategies of learning across academic programs by using techniques appropriate for different types of academic pursuits. You will learn what happens inside of the brain as one learns new information, the theories and strategies related to memory and retrieval, and deep vs. surface learning techniques.
