Handout:
--Adopted by the General Education Council—Minimum Expectations for All Course and Section Syllabi in General Education Core Curriculum Courses
*Correction in Bold—The addition of –General Education Learning Outcomes for designated courses

Motion:

R. Brown asked for a motion to approve adding General Education Learning Outcomes for designated courses to the adopted Minimum Expectations for All Course and Section Syllabi in General Education Core Curriculum Courses.  B. Stone so moved.  R. Mooney seconds the motion.

Motion passed unanimously.

Council will revisit Math at the next meeting because they did not have their learning outcomes in the system.

Motion:

Ron Brown asked for a motion to adopt the learning outcomes presented by departments.  S. Beebe so moved.  R. Mooney seconds the motion.

Discussion:

  • We are looking for a standard that is measurable for the learning outcomes
  • Choose whatever learning outcomes from CB report from 2004
  • Some of the learning outcomes need more work so we can provisionally approve and refine
  • Departments need to edit and correct their mistakes (grammar and carelessness) on the learning outcomes website and be more accurate in the future
  • Some concern about using grades
  • Cathy Fleuriet and Ron Brown met with the departments and shared the Comm Studies model.  Cathy talked to the chairs about what needed to be done and that it should start in the spring semester
  • Need to keep track and make sure this is an ongoing process and not start and stop
  • On campus-12 item review—model a lot after Florida and state mandated
  • Need a map of where we are going with a clear expectation of what we are teaching the students—(What they know and how can they demonstrate that)
  • English has some pre and post testing
  • Have 10-15 learning outcomes—meet and move along to the next (meet or change for higher attainment)

    For: 11    Opposed: 2

    Motion adopted.

****Now that the learning outcomes have been approved we will meet with departments to find some common ground for next fall.

Committee to review learning outcomes with departments:  E. Morrison, R. Mooney, M. Keefe, C. McCall, S. Beebe

Fine Arts and Philosophy Report—

GEC Course Syllabus Audit

November 8, 2007

Art 2313, Music 2313, Dance 2313, Theatre 2313, Philosophy 1305

Report to the General Education Council from Greg Passty and Greg Pollard

Using the scale of 5 (completely in compliance) to 1 (not at all in compliance), we reviewed general education syllabi from Fine Arts and Philosophy with the following findings:

Course Average Rating
Art 2313 4.0
Music 2313 3.5
Dance 2313 2.0
Theatre 2313 3.75
Philosophy 1305 3.25

Comments on the Fine Arts syllabi:

Very few had a statement for students with special needs.

Almost none listed TA’s.

Almost none mentioned the Honor Code, although many did have their own academic dishonesty statements and references to UPPS 7.01 or the student handbook.

One syllabus for Music 2313 was missing several pages.

The Dance syllabus lacked almost everything.

Comments on the Philosophy syllabi:

On several syllabi, the grading policy was either confusing or not explicit.

Honor Code, and disability statements were missing from many.

Failure to note Final Exam date and time was particularly grievous.

The semester and year were missing from one.

None listed TA’s.

Many were not sufficiently informative in their time-line schedules for the semester.

Many did not state whether the text was required or recommended.

Meeting adjourned 4:25 p.m.
