Report of the Philosophy 1320 Review Subcommittee
Members: Michael Keeffe, Eileen Morrison, Shirley Ogletree
After examining the submitted documentation for Philosophy 1320 and comparing it to the Texas State University-San Marcos Core Curriculum (Appendix C), the committee made the following recommendations and observations.
Recommendation:
When the submission recommendations are addressed (see below), we recommend that this course be approved by the General Education Council.
Recommendations before submission:
Observations:
The committee noted that this course had several strengths including flexibility of schedule (four weeks devoted to contemporary issues), linkage to the other disciplines, and emphasis on application including the evaluation strategies.
Motion:
Return to agenda the subcommittee recommendation for Philosophy 1320 when Vince Luizzi is present to answer questions from the council. M. Blanda seconds the motion.
All agreed to revisit this recommendation at the meeting on the 2nd Monday of November.

Components and the Coordinating Board (CB)-structure learning outcomes
Using the grid sent to the CB we need to bring all core curriculum into compliance
Reaffirm current core or recommendations to alter core
Yes-then do this year
No-then spring
Right now we can’t change Poli Sci or Hist, but could change everything else
Possible additions: Language study—come back
Science
Mathematics
Move to 120 Hours
Concern at state level about importance of language study and the importance of being more internationally competitive
T. Hindson and E. Blunk asked for clarification on PPS 4.01 in regards to General Education Core Curriculum to replace where it says General Studies.
R. Cheatham is considering a change of Fine Arts 2313 to 3313 to be taken as advanced hours under the 120-hour change. The Art, Dance, Music and Theatre 2313 are cross-listed with the same book. The course should teach the same information with some course specifics. In the past there was a coordinator of all the FA core courses and it was compliant, but without a coordinator they aren’t as compliant.
Core curriculum is mostly in the hands of the department, but we can make recommendations.
Meeting adjourned at 4:01 p.m.
