Snap Surveys

TREC coordinates the use of Snap Surveys for faculty who would like to use it for a research project. Snap can be used to create and manage web-based surveys. It allows the developer to incorporate the security, access, and permissions needed to meet the Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines.

Snap is a PC based software and users must be connected to the Texas State network to build a survey (respondents can use any computer and browser). Users must have administrative rights to the PC on which they are building their Snap survey.

The management of Snap is overseen by the coordinator, Yaowen Han. We provide online training on an as needed basis. See guidelines below for more information on training.


Guidelines and Training

To access Snap, you must be a faculty, staff, or graduate student at Texas State University and must be trained. There are two training options: recorded training available on an as needed basis and face-to-face training offered once a year. To access the recorded training, complete the Snap Training Request Form.

After you finish the training you will be provided with a Snap Webhost account. The account will be accessed using a unique username and password. Do not give your account information to other individuals. Read below for part of Texas State's policy regarding authentication credentials:

01.02   Texas State restricts access to its non-public information resources by authenticating the individual identity and eligibility of all users of those resources. The university assigns unique identification and authentication credentials to individuals for use in asserting their identity and eligibility to use the university’s information resources. Examples include the NetID with its companion password and the Texas State ID number with its companion PIN. Each NetID and Texas State ID number shall be unique university-wide. The person to whom the credentials are assigned is the only authorized user of those credentials.

Email Recruiting of Research Participants

If you plan to recruit Texas State faculty, staff, or students to participate in a research survey, you must comply with UPPS 02.02.09. To find email distribution lists, go to http://www.tr.txstate.edu/get-connected/computerservices/list-tools.html.


Types of Surveys

Non Grant/Contract Research Surveys

The use of Snap Surveys for non grant/contract research purposes will be free of charge to faculty. Research projects should result in a peer-reviewed publication or presentation.

Graduate students who would like to use Snap for research purposes must have administrative privileges to a computer that is on the Texas State domain.

Grant/Contract Surveys

Faculty who would like to use Snap Surveys to collect survey data as part of a grant or contract must attend training. The grant personnel who attends training will be responsible for building and managing the survey.

Administrative Surveys

Administrative surveys (e.g., exit surveys) need to meet the requirement of UPPS 01.03.05 Administrative Surveys. If it is appropriate to use Snap for an administrative survey, departments are expected to send a representative to training before they are given access. The representative will be responsible for building and managing the administrative survey.
