Externally Funded Proposal Assistance

Guidelines

The purpose of this initiative is to assist tenured and tenure track faculty at Texas State University with preparation of proposals for funded research. To be considered, proposals must: seek funding from external sponsors at $75,000 or more and be considered competitive. In addition, proposals must meet the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s definition of research.*

To request assistance, the principal investigator should submit to the TREC office (attention: Dr. Gail Ryser) a one page summary (double-spaced) at least six weeks prior to the proposal date (although the more lead time we have, the more likely we will be able to provide support). The summary should include the following information:

  1. Name and department of principal investigator and list of co-principal investigators
  2. Sponsor and amount of award
  3. Proposal title and one paragraph summary of project
  4. Proposal due date

Services Offered:

  1. Provides writing/editorial assistance on technical components of the proposal (e.g., clarifying a rationale for specific aims/goals, research questions, hypotheses) from a quantitative methodologist.
  2. Provides guidance on selecting the appropriate analytic method(s) for proposals.
  3. Attends meetings (up to three) with proposal writing team.
  4. Identifies evaluator for the final project.
  5. Assists with budget development.
  6. Interfaces with Offices of Proposal Development and Sponsored Programs.

Principal Investigator Responsibilities:

  1. Oversees and coordinates proposal preparation and submission.
  2. Serves as program manager and sets and meets internal deadlines.
  3. Submits final proposal to Sponsored Programs.

*Research and Development (R&D) means all research activities, both basic and applied, and all development activities that are supported at universities, colleges, and other non-profit institutions. “Research” is defined as a systematic study directed toward fuller scientific knowledge or understanding of the subject studied. “Development” is the systematic use of knowledge and understanding gained from research directed toward the production of useful materials, devices, systems, or methods, including design and development of prototypes and processes. The term research also includes activities involving the training of individuals in research techniques where such activities utilize the same facilities as other research and development activities and where such activities are not included in the instruction function. The absence of the words “Research” and/or “Development” in the title of the program does not indicate it should exclude.
