The Certified Driver Education Teacher
A driver education endorsement may be added as an additional specialization
on any current Texas Teacher Certificate issued by the Texas Education
Agency. You must complete a nine-hour program with a grade of
C or better in each course, possess a Texas driver's licence,
and meet the driver record evaluation standards established for
Texas school bus drivers before you are recommended for endorsement.
No Ex-CET test is required. You would be qualified to teach the
classroom, simulation, and in-car phases of driver education at
public or commercial schools in Texas. Listed below are the three
courses you would take in your nine-hour program.

The
Driver Education Teaching Assistant
Teaching
assistants may be employed at public or commercial driver education
programs. A teaching assistant in driver education must have been
a licensed driver for a minimum of five years, be a high school
graduate, and possess a Texas driver's license. In addition, teaching
assistants must meet the driving record evaluation standards established
for Texas school bus drivers.
Teaching
assistants may be qualified to conduct in-car training by completing
the six hours of course work listed below with a grade of C of better
in both classes.

Teaching assistants may be approved to assist and substitute for certified
teachers in the classroom phase of drivers education and to conduct
all laboratory phases.
Training qualifications required for this level of performance may be met
by completing the following course work with a C or better in each class.

Driver
Education Teacher Preparation at Texas State
Teacher
preparation was the original mission of Texas State University-San
Marcos when it opened in 1903. The Driver Education Teacher Preparation
program was introduced at the university in 1950. A special facility
called the Traffic Safety Center was built in 1974 on 25 acres near
San Marcos Airport on Highway 21 for the specific purpose of Driver
Education Teacher Preparation.
The
Traffic Safety Center complex includes multimedia classrooms, a
simulation laboratory, vehicles, and a four acre motorcycle and
automobile driving range. The facility is among the best in Texas
and the nation. Approximately 75 students take part in the courses
offered by faculty year round. There is a steady demand for Driver
Education classroom teachers and in-car instructors in public and
commercial driving schools in Texas
Drivers
Education is offered by The Department of Engineering & Technology, which is an
academic division of the College of Science at Texas State University-San
Marcos. As its general mission, the department prepares people for
technical and professional careers in industry and education.

State is located less one hour from Austin and San Antonio. Classes
are offered during times when people who work full time can take
advantage of them.
Drivers
Education teacher preparation classes are offered as one night a
week classes during the Fall and Spring semesters. Labs are by arrangement.
Summer school classes are offered consecutively at the same location,
to accommodate teachers who return for certification during the
Summer Session I semester.
