Driver Education Teacher Preparation at Texas State

Teacher preparation was the original mission of Texas State University-San Marcos when it opened in 1903. The Driver Education Teacher Preparation program was introduced at the university in 1950. A special facility called the Traffic Safety Center was built in 1974 on 25 acres near San Marcos Airport on Highway 21 for the specific purpose of Driver Education Teacher Preparation.

The Traffic Safety Center complex includes multimedia classrooms, a simulation laboratory, vehicles, and a four acre motorcycle and automobile driving range. The facility is among the best in Texas and the nation. Approximately 75 students take part in the courses offered by faculty year round. There is a steady demand for Driver Education classroom teachers and in-car instructors in public and commercial driving schools in Texas

Drivers Education is offered by The Department of Engineering & Technology, which is an academic division of the College of Science at Texas State University-San Marcos. As its general mission, the department prepares people for technical and professional careers in industry and education.
