Motorcycle Safety Courses

There are two motorcycle courses you can register for:
     1.  Basic Motorcycle Course (required by DPS to obtain license)
          or
     2.  Experienced Motorcycle Course (Must have a current Class M drivers license)

 

  • Persons ages 15-17 must have a valid instruction permit or license from Texas to take these classes.
  • Persons ages 18-25 must have a valid instruction permit or license from any state.
  • Persons 26 and over only need proof of age (no drivers license required).
  • All courses are conducted at the Texas State University - San Marcos Traffic Safety Center located at 4400 Airport Hwy. 21.


Basic Motorcycle Safety Course (includes motorcycle and helmet)

Weekend courses are held on Friday 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:30 am - 5:30 pm

Weekday courses are held on Tuesday 8:30 am - 5:30 pm, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30 am - 1:30pm

Course Cost:  $171.00

                      $85.50 for student instructor led course (date will be shown below with (**) if available).

These are the motorcycles we are currently using on the course:
  • Suzuki G2 250 - cruiser style
  • Suzuki TU 250 - standard style
  • Suzuki GN 125 - standard style
  • Kawasaki KLX 250 Enduro - on/off road style
  • Kawaski Eliminator 125 - cruiser style
  • Yamaha Zuma 125 - scooter

You may bring your own bike if you wish.  Limit is 500 cc, must have insurance, inspection and license plate.

Below is the schedule of available class dates.  If the course date you are looking for does not appear below, the course is full and no longer available for registration:

NO HALF-PRICE COURSES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

**   Half-price course taught by student instructors. (Date will be shown above with (**) IF AVAILABLE).

Your registration will not be processed, and you will not be placed in a class, until payment is received.  Motorcyles and textbooks are provided. There are loan helmets and cotton gloves also available. You will be issued a certificate upon completion of this course for an insurance discount or possible ticket dismissal.  Successful class completion eliminates the DPS riding test for licensing purposes for most people with an unrestricted Texas drivers license.


Experienced Motorcycle Safety Course (bring your own bike)

Course is scheduled from 9:00am - 5:00pm
Course Fee - $45.00
 

2013 Experienced Rider Course Scheduled Classes

NOTE: We can schedule an Experienced Rider Class for your group of 5 to 12 people. Please call 512-245-2137 if interested in forming a group on a designated date.

Your registration will not be processed, and you will not be placed in a class, until payment is received. 
You must have a current
Class M driver’s license and proof of motorcycle insurance to take this course.  Motorcycles are not provided with the Experienced Rider Course.  You must bring your own motorcycle (no size limit) with current registration and inspection sticker.  Loan helmets are available.

You will be issued a certificate upon completion of this course for an insurance discount or possible ticket dismissal.  Successful class completion eliminates the DPS riding test for licensing purposes.


PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT ITEMS:

     ►  You will not be added to a class roster UNTIL YOU HAVE PAID


    If you do not attend the class and request a refund, a $25 administrative fee will be deducted   
        from the amount refunded.


    
Please note that payment cannot be made on-line for the half-price student-led class.
