Driver Education Teacher Preparation

The Certified Driver Education Teacher

A driver education endorsement may be added as an additional specialization on any current Texas Teacher Certificate issued by the Texas Education Agency.  You must complete a nine-hour program with a grade of C or better in each course, possess a Texas driver's license, and meet the driver record evaluation standards established for Texas school bus drivers before you are recommended for endorsement.  No TExAS test is required.  You would be qualified to teach the classroom, simulation, and in-car phases of driver education at public or commercial schools in Texas.  Listed below are the three courses you would take in your nine-hour program.

TECH 4383 Driver and Traffic Safety Education I
TECH 4385 Driver and Traffic Safety Education II
TECH 4393 Driver and Traffic Safety Education III

The Driver Education Teaching Assistant

Teaching assistants may be employed at public or commercial driver education programs.  A teaching assistant in driver education must have been a licensed driver for a minimum of five years, be a high school graduate, and possess a Texas driver’s license.  In addition, teaching assistants must meet the driving record evaluation standards established for Texas school bus drivers.

Teaching assistants may be qualified to conduct in-car training by completing the six hours of course work listed below with a grade of C or better in both classes.

Teaching assistants may be approved to assist and substitute for certified teachers in the classroom phase of driver education and to conduct all laboratory phases.

Training qualification required for this level of performance may be met by completing the following course work with a grade of C or better in each class.

Course Descriptions

TECH 4383 – Driver and Traffic Safety Education I:  Content, methods, and materials for instruction in the classroom phase of driver education in Texas.  Topics include: Texas traffic laws; Texas Education Agency standards for high school driver education: driver behaviors, attitudes, and psychomotor skills and safety in the highway transportation system.

TECH 4385 – Driver and Traffic Safety Education II:  Content, methods, and materials for instruction in the laboratory phase of driver education in Texas.  Topics include in-car instruction, multi-car range, and simulation.  During laboratory sessions, participants will observe in-car instructors, peer teach in the car, and teach a high school student to drive.

TECH 4393 – Driver and Traffic Safety Education III:  Content, procedures, and administration of multi-phase driver education programs.  Topics include: scheduling, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, record keeping, lesson plan development, and driver education for the handicapped.  Practicum in classroom and or simulation instruction.
