Southwest Texas State’s 1975 defensive player of the year in football,
Raymond Washington, is a new inductee to the “T” Association
Hall of Honor. Washington was a four-year letter winner and served as
the team captain of the Bobcat football team.
During
his four years at Southwest Texas, he received many athletic honors.
Washington was a member of the all-Lone Star Conference first-team in
1974 and 1975. He was the LSC Defensive Player of the Week in 1975,
first-team NAIA in District IV, an NAIA All-American, Associated Press
All-American and an Honorable Mention.
Washington
went on to be a coach and teacher in Sweeny, Texas, where he led his
basketball team to three state championships while co-sponsoring the
youth basketball programs. In 1987, Washington was named Coach of the
Year and two years later he coached the THSCA South All-Star team.
As
a football coach, Washington led his team to the state finals in 1983,
the semifinals in 1984 and 1998, the quarterfinals in 1982 and to a
co-district championship in 1986.
