Former
SWT head coach Milton Jowers described Leo Chaffin as the “toughest
football player he ever had.”
Chafin
transferred from Southwestern University to SWT in 1950, after Southwestern
dropped their football program. But Southwestern’s loss was the
Bobcat’s gain as Chafin became a two-time All-Lone Star Conference
second team selection in 1951 and ’52. In his two years at SWT,
he rushed for 1,460 yards, including a 181 yard effort against Texas
A&I which was the Bobcat record for 15 years.
After
graduating from SWT in 1952, Chafin served in the U.S. Army, where he
was selected third-team All-Army in Germany in 1955. Later on that same
year, he became the first SWT football player to sign a professional
contract with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
He
was the founder of SWT’s Bobcat Club. During the first and third
years of existence, Chafin was the club’s president. In 1986,
he founded the New Braunfels chapter of the Bobcat Club.
