Bruns lettered in football for SWT in 1951-53 as a center. He was selected to the First Team All-Conference in 1951 and 1952. In his senior year, he served as a team captain and made the Second Team All-Conference.
Teaming with All-American Quarterback Pence Dacus, Bruns never had a fumbled snap, nor a bad snap to the punter or place-kick holder. Bruns was proclaimed by legendary SWT coach, Milton Jowers, to be “the most vicious offensive blocker in the history of college.”

Bruns has accomplished a spectacular list of achievements since graduating from SWT. Most notable is his Charter Membership in the SWT Athletic Department Endowment Fund – a program to which he donated $100,000 last fall.

Other milestones of his community service include being a football official for 23 years and a basketball official for 10 years. He then became a member of the Alamo Lions Club and served as the club’s Vice-President.
Bruns is a life member of the American Numismatic Association and the Texas Numismatic Association. He is a member of the National Rifle Association, the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame Association and serves on many non-profit organizations in the Rio Grande Valley while providing tremendous help and financial aid to those organizations.
