“Blackie” was a three-sport athlete at SWT from 1925-1929.
He played football, basketball, and baseball.
As
a student at SWT, “Blackie” was a leader from beginning
to end by serving as the president of his senior class in 1929. In addition,
he presided over the Business Ad. Club In 1929 and was a member of the
Science Club, the Harris Blair Literature Society and the “T”
Association.
Following
graduation from SWT, “Blackie” began his teaching and coaching
career – a “full-time calling” that lasted more than
50 years. Over the years, he served as a teacher, coach, principal and
superintendent in public schools.
His
basketball coaching career spanned 14 years and surpassed the 700-win
plateau. A highlight of his dedication to high school student/athletes
came in 1947 when he was instrumental in urging the UIL to include girls
in basketball competition in Texas.
In
his community of Bastrop, “Blackie” has served as a member
of the Lions Club for 47 years, including being its President and Secretary.
For 40 years, he has served as a Scout Master. During that time, he
has seen 47 boys honored as Eagle Scouts.
He
continues to serve the athletic program in the Bastrop Independent School
as the timekeeper and pressbox coordinator for football games. Additionally,
he was the record keeper at all track meets. As a special achievement
since graduation from SWT, he lists his help in organizing the Bastrop
Senior Center for its 400 members.
