Following graduation from SWT, “Blackie” began his teaching and coaching career – a “full-time calling” that lasted more than 50 years. Over the years, he served as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in public schools.

His basketball coaching career spanned 14 years and surpassed the 700-win plateau. A highlight of his dedication to high school student/athletes came in 1947 when he was instrumental in urging the UIL to include girls in basketball competition in Texas.

In his community of Bastrop, “Blackie” has served as a member of the Lions Club for 47 years, including being its President and Secretary. For 40 years, he has served as a Scout Master. During that time, he has seen 47 boys honored as Eagle Scouts.

He continues to serve the athletic program in the Bastrop Independent School as the timekeeper and pressbox coordinator for football games. Additionally, he was the record keeper at all track meets. As a special achievement since graduation from SWT, he lists his help in organizing the Bastrop Senior Center for its 400 members.
