Corky Nelson lettered three years as a center and linebacker in football from 1961-1963. Corky received all-conference honors in 1962 and was named team captain of the undefeated 1963 team. Upon graduating, Corky held posts as the Assistant Football Coach and Head Track Coach at Alamo Heights, First assistant Football Coach at Harlandale High School and was the head coach at Harlandale High School from 1967-1969. After a brief stint as Defensive line and linebacker Coach at the University of North Texas from 1969-1971, Corky returned to the High School ranks in 1971 to lead John Tyler High School to a 1973 State Championship. Corky was the Defensive Coordinator for Baylor University from 1974-1981 helping lead the Bears to a 1974 and 1980 Southwest Conference Championship and a spot in the 1979 Peach Bowl. IN 1982 Corky was named the Head Football Coach at North Texas and led the Mean Green to a Southland Conference Championship in 1983 and was named the SLC and AFCA District 4 Coach of the Year. During his time at the University of North Texas, Corky worked as the head coach from 1982-1990 and served as Athletic Director from 1989-1990. Corky spent time as the Segiun I.S. D. Head Football Coach and Athletic Director from 1991-1996, Assistant Football Coach at Klein Forrest High School from 1997-1998, and Assistant Football Coach for the University of Mary Hardin Baylor from 1998-2003. Corky has had many articles published inTexas Coaching Magazine, has given numerous football clinic lectures and is an active member of the Rotary Club. Corky is married to Judy Nelson and they have three children Tracy Nelson Clark, Carlyn Nelson and Kerie Nelson Echols.
