A successful two-year stint at Southwest Texas State paved the way for a very successful gridiron coaching career for Jerry Hopkins.

After graduating from SWT in 1956, Hopkins embarked on the football coaching career as an assistant with stops in San Antonio, Cameron, and San Angelo in a four-year period. He then moved on to Sonora High School where his spectacular career got underway. During his 10-year stint, he won eight district, and three state championships. After three combined years at Seguin and Midland High School he returned to Sonora from where he wrapped up with a career record of 236-96-6. In 1979, Hopkins was inaugurated into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. He then finished his career serving as principal of Sonora High.
