Center for Geospatial Intelligence and Investigation
Dr. Kim Rossmo is a Research Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Texas State University, and the Director of the Center for Geospatial Intelligence and Investigation. GII conducts research on how to improve our response to crime problems and homeland security threats, both foreign and domestic. Geospatial and other forms of tactical information are used to develop information management techniques. Employing a cross-disciplinary and multiagency approach, GII seeks to help law enforcement, intelligence, and military agencies build more powerful investigative and analytic tools. Computer modeling based on human behavioral theories help extract knowledge from data in order to better connect the dots in environments of information overload and uncertain threat.
Dr. Rossmo recently completed a study on the geographic features associated with illegal land border crossings in Texas. Border control is a crucial component of national security, but the length of the U.S. border poses a significant operational challenge. He will be extending this research to focus on American citizens who engage in such activity, many of whom are drug smugglers. He has also been involved in analyses of the foraging patterns of Great White sharks off the coast of South Africa, bats in Scotland, and bees in England. These studies provide a better understanding of animal behavior, and may have epidemiological applications in the response to such diseases as malaria and dengue. Currently, he is leading two large research projects examining applications of geographic profiling to counterterrorism threat detection and the military investigation of insurgent attacks in urban environments. In his spare time he is writing a book entitled Criminal Investigative Failures, and his two-part article on this topic was recently published by the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin.
