FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I've met someone interested in funding my work. What do I do next?
A: Contact OSP. The Contract Specialist will be happy to send templates of approved contracts and other types of agreements.

Q: Why do you review/negotiate awards?
A: We review awards to ensure that Federal, State, and university rules and regulations are properly applied. We will also negotiate of intellectual property rights and to protect the interests of the faculty, staff and students.

Q: Why do some reviews take longer than others?
A: No two contracts are exactly alike. Each party is looking to protect their own interests and sometimes more than one round of negotiation is needed. Often, terms under negotiation must be reviewed by the legal department on both sides. This takes time.

Q: I have received a check. Now what do I do?
A: Deliver the check, any documentation that came with it, a scope of work and a budget to OSP.

Q: Do I have to go through the university?
A: Yes, if you are planning to use any university resources and want the award to be included on the regular reports to the Deans and Chairs.

Q: Why did you contact the sponsor?
A: Often there are questions concerning award terms that we do not feel comfortable answering. The sponsor is the best source of information for regulations concerning the award. We maintain regular professional contact with our sponsors to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations.

Q:  Can a grant account pay for a Sam's Club membership?
A: No. Generally, memberships are not considered to be allocable to grant projects. It is recommended that another source of funds such as recovered indirect could be used for the membership fee.

Q: What documents require approval by the Office of Sponsored Programs?
A: Generally, travel applications, travel reimbursements, PCRs, payment requests (AP-1), tuition adjustments, participant/substistence payment request, contracted service agreements and contracted services payment vouchers require approval by OSP.
