A dual beam magneto-optical setup employing a single axis photo-elastic modulator was designed and constructed. The beam transmitted through or reflected of the sample is split by a Wollaston prism in two orthogonal high-quality linearly polarized beams. The intensity of both beams is measured by two similar Silicon photodetectors. Lock in amplifiers and dc multimeters are used to measure the 2 omega and dc signals. Preliminary measurements taken at a retardation depth of 2.256 radians show that the PEM interference effect is suppressed in the difference 2 omega signal while the MOKE contribution to the 2 omega ignal is doubled.
