This class is a primer to Information Security for Texas State faculty and staff and will include the following topics:

  • Overview of IT security and current initiatives at Texas State University
  • Appropriate Use policy (04.01.07)
  • Current threats in Information Security and ways to protect against them, eg.:

            § SPAM
            § Phishing
            § Malware
            § Spyware

  • Best practices for:

            § Data backup
            § System patching
            § Using anti-virus software
            § Host-based firewalls
            § Creating user accounts and passwords
            § Mobile computing and portable media
            § Wireless network security in and out of the office
            § Securing your home computer
            § Securely using the Internet
            § Securing confidential information

  • Do you have Personally Identifiable Information (PII) on your computer? Learn how to find out and what to do about it
  • Techniques for protecting yourself from identity theft and Internet fraud
  • Safety tips for using social networking sites (MySpace, Facebook, etc.)
  • Music and file sharing, mitigating peer-to-peer risks, from both the security perspective and legal perspective
  • How to sign up for the Information-Security listserv
  • How to report a suspected security breach or policy violation
