Texas State professor named State Three-Dimensional Artist

Beverly Penn, a professor in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University, has been appointed 2017 State Three-Dimensional Artist by the Texas State Legislature.

The legislature made the appointment May 18. Additionally, Texas State Distinguished Alumnus George Strait was named State Musician.

Penn is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including a Rockefeller Foundation residency in Bellagio, Italy; a Connemara Conservancy Artist Grant; grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts and a Fulbright Fellowship in Barcelona, Spain. She has also received nine Texas State University Faculty Research Grants involving research in Mexico, Italy, Spain and New York.

Penn's sculptures are included in more than 100 private collections and in the permanent museum collections of the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York City, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., the Austin Museum of Art, the Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Wisconsin, the Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz, the El Paso Museum of Art and the Monarch Center for Contemporary Art in Washington.

Penn received her B.F.A. from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1982, her M.A. from New Mexico State University in 1987 and her M.F.A. from the State University of New York at New Paltz, New York, in 1989.
