The Texas State University-San Marcos Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology’s Associate Professor Michael O’Malley has been named a Fulbright U.S. Scholar and will travel to Chile to lecture and research Aug. 2012-Jan. 2013.
The project O’Malley will contribute to while in Chile is “School Improvement through Quality Educational Leadership Preparation: Understanding the Role of School Administrators in Achieving Inglés Abre Puertas Goals.” O’Malley will lecture on educational leadership at Universidad Alberto Hurtado in Santiago and participate in a seminar at Universidad de Concepción in the Biobío region of southern Chile.
The research study is a qualitative, multi-case project that seeks to understand the impact of school administrators’ form of engagement with the Inglés Abre Puertas program on its success at the campus level, with particular attention to issues of educational equity. Ingés Abre Puertas is a national initiative that seeks to foster English language fluency amongst all Chileans within one generation. The study is designed to illuminate an as yet unexamined link in this school improvement initiative and to support integration of leadership development into the national implementation model.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” With this goal as a starting point, the Fulbright Program has provided almost 300,000 participants--chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential--with the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 7,500 new grants annually. Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in 155 countries worldwide.
