James Petersen, Professor of Geography at Texas State University-San Marcos, has received the George J. Miller Award from the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE).

The award will be presented in August at the NCGE national conference in Portland, Ore.

Petersen, whose scholarship is focused on geography education and geomorphology, is the author of three textbooks, two guidebooks, nine book chapters, and dozens of professional papers and presentations. He is the recipient of many teaching awards, including the Distinguished Teaching Award from the NCGE. He has served in several positions on the NCGE board, including as President in 2000.

Founded in 1915, the NCGE comprises U.S. and international teachers, professors, students, businesses, and others who support geographic education. The George J. Miller Award, which recognizes distinguished service to geography education, is the highest honor given by the NCGE.
