Las Nuevas Tamaleras
University Arts will bring a favorite play back to the Texas State University-San Marcos campus Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m. at the Evans Auditorium as part of the Encore Series of events.
Las Nuevas Tamaleras, or, "The New Tamale Makers," written by San Antonio playwright Alicia Mena, is a bilingual, one-act comedy that focuses on three modern day Chicanas trying to make tamales for the first time. As the characters struggle in their work, the invisible spirits of Doña Juanita and Doña Mercedes arrive to assist their young counterparts. The outrageous situation takes a wild turn when the experienced, spirit tamaleras disagree on the details of what composes the ideal tamale. The new tamaleras clumsily work through the process to the comedic frustration of the spirits.
