SAN MARCOS – Gary Hartman, Ph.D., director of the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University-San Marcos, will deliver a free public lecture as part of the Wimberley Lecture Series, Tuesday, March 9.
The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at Chapel in the Hills in Wimberley. Hartman will speak on Texas music and how it reflects the unique history and tremendous cultural diversity of Texas and the Southwest. Discussion will touch on some of the more prominent musicians who have come from Texas, but will also examine how music has been very important for all ethnic communities throughout the Southwest in terms of helping them articulate their ethnic identity, pass along their traditions from one generation to the next and communicate with each other and with other ethnic communities.
The series features Texas State faculty, held the second Tuesday of each month. Future speakers include Sally Caldwell, sociology faculty, on April 13; and Verna Henson, criminal justice faculty, on May 11.
